GURL: First things first; introductions, who the hell are ya?

Dandy: So my name is Dandy issues, I’m a drag king based down south and I’m also known as the “Bearcub of Bournemouth”. My drag is a pretty boi/ bear cub mash up with a hint of nostalgia and a dash of modern gay pop culture chucked in for bants!

GURL: How long have you been performing?

Dandy: I’m still fairly new to my scene as I started drag late July 2019 and have been mainly performing our local lipsync battle since November. If you are ever down south, you will nearly always find me at any drag night at DYMK in Bournemouth! When stuck in lockdown, you can find me on online where I host of GOD SAVE THE KINGS, a new bi-monthly Digital drag king show taking place on Instagram live.

GURL: What’s been your favourite performance so far?

Dandy: My favourite performance so far has to be my bad guy/bad romance mix I used to open for Crystal (RPDRUK) in March! This was my first paid gig and I’m really proud of this number as I had just under a week to make an entirely new mix along with a costume to perform that night (fun fact: I also made a confetti cannon from scratch in that week as well!)

GURL: Ooooo we love this, you’re such a bad guy 😉

GURL: Show us one of your most fabulous looks?

Dandy: Recently I’ve really been enjoying looks with different texture and set colour schemes!

GURL: Ooooft we love that the hints of blue!

GURL: Who are your biggest idols?

Dandy: AHH! I have too many!! In general, I think a lot of people I look up to in drag are performers who push the boat out of with what we should be expecting at a drag show. There’s a King called Cesare who I have always loved their work even before I did drag. Their performance “Mad Man Moon” to me is the best drag performance I have ever seen, from use of projections to storytelling it really is something special! Similarly, the Chicago queen Lucky Stiff really introduced me to the idea of sharing an emotional connection with the audience. I also really like Mr Showbiz himself Murray Hill who always reminds me to keep my acts light!

GURL: Tell us something absolutely random about yourself?

Dandy: I used to be a university national champion cheerleader! In the 4 years I did it, I placed top 3 back to back for 3 years in a row and won two different national titles twice in 2014. It used to be a joke though that the only time they tried to put me in the air to do a trick, I actually had a full break down and cried because of my fear of heights!!

GURL: Well damn, we’re gonna give you a call if we ever need someone to cheer us on! (No lifts of course)

GURL: Any advice for someone wanting to embrace the art of drag?

Dandy: Practice makes perfect but at the same time don’t compare yourself progress to others! Everyone’s drag is different, both in art and in progress. One of the worst things I did when I first started was to compare myself to other people on the scene and get discouraged when I wasn’t seen as part of their group, or I saw peoples who faces painted better than mine. Your style will develop over time and so will your place within the community.

GURL: One song to be your anthem, go!

Dandy: Chelsea Dagger by the Fratellis! It is my ultimate drunk lad song and it proper brings out my South West farmer roots!

GURL:
Well damn, now we want to get drunk and party with you!

GURL: If you had to recommend us a fellow fierce entertainer, who should we hit up?

Dandy: Again I have too many! I have to big up my Bournemouth King scene, Its small but pretty amazing! Zack Of All Tradeszzz paved the way for drag kings in Bournemouth as well as Well Hung Parliament, Royale E. Blue and Cock Monsieur both on my scene too and are hella cool dudes that more people need to talk about! I need to give a shout out to my drag brother from another mother Xander Black who is an amazing up and coming king that’s a lipsync assassin in the making! He may bully me and be the first one to call me out if I fall over but he’s always there when I need him the most and I wouldn’t have my drag brother any other way!

GURL: Wow so many amazing kings in the mix <3

GURL: Finally, what’s your fave design from our collection?

Dandy: Well I would be a bad bear cub if I didn’t say the rose gold bear sweatshirt! (I am literally wearing it right now as I fill this out haha!)

GURL: That’s such a coincidence, wearing the exact same one as your interview is being typed up, matching kings!
